The Human Cost of Our Oil Addiction
The Lives Per Gallon Story Project was inspired by the devastation caused by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. The costs of the disaster are immeasurable, the damage done to the lives, environment and wildlife of the region is both unthinkable and still largely unknown.
Sadly, we were forewarned - - Terry Tamminen’s book Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction gave an unblinking assessment of the true price of petroleum and predicted the potential for the devastation now unfolding in the Gulf and many other parts of the globe.
The Project was launched in July of 2010 when SGA staff went to the communities of the Gulf Coast to interview victims of the spill in order to hear first hand how they were be impacted. In April, 2011 SGA staff returned to the Gulf Coast to re-interview victims of the oil spill one year later. As one victim stated "Though the oil has stopped flowing the suffering continues." One to two minute video clips from the victims -- as well as ways you can help are posted the Lives Per Gallon Story Project website.
MISSION
The focus of the project is to inform the public about how they can help individuals in need in the Gulf Region. Over a year later the Story Project continues to give the unheard victims of the BP oil spill a voice; a venue to express how they are being impacted; and a way to CONNECT with those who want to help. The story project website also provide links to organizations taking action to help the people, environment and wildlife in the region as well as helpful ways for people to take action from their homes.

Read Crude Awakenings, a now timely report written by SGA's Program Associate Kristina Haddad and Executive Director Terry Tamminen for the Environment Now Foundation and Santa Monica BayKeeper in 2000. The report investigates oil spill prevention and response in California and exposed several "Risks" on the part of the government.
